1. The funeral and the cult of Brasidas in Amphipolis: from the traditional oikist cult to a new form of ‘personality cult’ A rightly celebrated paragraph in Thucydides’ Histories (v 11, 1) describes the solemn burial of the Spartan general Brasidas and his appointment as ‘hero founder’ of Amphipolis, in the summer of 422 B.C. This passage is a rich source of information about several important topics, such as Hagnon’s and Brasidas’ lives, Amphipolis’ history and topography, the cults paid to human beings in pre- Hellenistic Greece, the relationship between these cults and the self-identity of an ancient polis. The usual density of Thucydides’ style and the almost total lack of alternative literary evidence make the interpretation of these few lines a really diicult task. It is useful to start from a quotation and translation of the passage
in full and then to address separately the many speciic historical and philological questions raised by it. (…)
