Augusto C. Adónis B. de Conrado, b.1904

Augusto de Conrado was a largely-forgotten early 20th century Mozambican poet and prose writer who was rescued from oblivion in the 1980s, primarily by a series of four articles in Tempo and Portuguese Studies by Eduardo White, Manuel Lemos and Patrick Chabal. The last of these chronologically was jointly authored by Chabal and White – «Augusto de Conrado: an early Mozambican poet» Portuguese Studies vol.4 (1988). The others appeared in the Mozambican weekly Tempo and are referenced below.

Conrado’s reputation rested mainly on his poetry and his collaboration with the journal O Brado Africano, but Lemos’s two-part article in Tempo focuses on an early novella of less than fifty pages, published in 1931 under the title A Perjura, ou, A Mulher de Duplo Amor, about a married woman who takes an Italian lover.
