Σημαντικός μηχανισμός του Kτησίβου, του μεγαλύτερου ίσως μηχανικού της ελληνιστικής περιόδου. Aποτελείται από συνδυασμό δοχείων, με ρυθμιζόμενους ελεγκτές ροής του ύδατος, έτσι ώστε να επιτυγχάνεται η επιθυμητή ανύψωση του πλωτήρα στο τελευταίο δοχείο.
O πλωτήρας φέρει δείκτη, που δείχνει την ακριβή ώρα πάνω σε περιστρεφόμενο τύμπανο. Tο τύμπανο αλλάζει θέση ανάλογα με την ημερομηνία, ώστε να εξασφαλίζεται η ακριβής διαίρεση των δώδεκα ημερήσιων ωρών, που μετρούσαν την εποχή εκείνη. Για τη λειτουργία του ρολογιού είναι απαραίτητος χειριστής, ο οποίος μια φορά τη μέρα το τροφοδοτεί με νερό και τοποθετεί το τύμπανο με τις ώρες στη σωστή του ημερομηνία.
An important mechanism, invented by Ktesibios,
the greater engineer of the hellenistic ere. It consists of a combination of containers, with adjustable regulators of the water flow, so that the desired rising of the float in the last container is attained. The float has an indicator that shows the exact hour on a rotating drum. This drum changes places according to the date, so that the exact division of the 12 day-hours (system used during that period) can be ensured.
For the operation of the clock a manipulator is indispensable: once a day, he supplies the water needed and puts the drum with the hour indications at the correct date.
